Excursions - getaway suggestions 

There are numerous escapes and experiences to be had in Geilo, both for those who are independant explorers or those who prefer group outings.

Rallarvegen

The old construction road along the Bergen railway from Haugastøl to Myrdal and Flåm, and from Upsete to Voss is called Rallarvegen. The road is a total of 123 km long and goes through some of Norway's most remarkable high mountain nature. Rallarvegen is one of the country's most momular bicycling stretches, and to bicycle the entire route takes two days.

There is a train that transports bicycles on the Bergen railway. Train departures daily. You must reserve a place for your bicycle in advance. Price: NOK 150.

The Bergen Railway  

The Bergen Railway is voted one of the world’s most beautiful train journeys. The train ride over Northern Europe’s biggest mountain plateau is spectacular and varied. 

 

The Flåm Railway 

Is one of the highlights and is a 20-km-long train journey from the mountain station of Myrdal down to Flåm, down beside the fjord, takes around 55 minutes. On the journey, you have views of some of the most magnificent mountain scenery in Norway with an ever-changing panorama of tall mountains and cascading waterfalls. 

 

Splendid Norwegian fjords - on UNESCO's World Heritage List!

The boat sails out the Aurlandsfjord and into the Naeroyfjord, one of the narrowest fjord in Europe. The Naeroyfjord is included on UNESCO's famous World Heritage List. Surrounded by towering mountains up to 1,800 metres high, this branch of the Sognefjord is amazingly beautiful.

Naeroyfjord is voted to the world’s best preserved tourist destination. It takes only 90 minutes by car from Geilo, which is a beautiful branch of Sognefjord, and at its narrowest it is only 250 metres wide.

Experience the world’s longest and deepest fjords, with numerous waterfalls and vast rivers. See marine mammals and abandoned Norwegian farms along the way.

Stalheimskleiva

The journey continues by coach up the steep and spectacular hairpin bends of Stalheimskleiva. The road up to Stalheim Hotel has 13 steep bends. After enjoying the wonderful views of the Stalheimsfossen and Sivlefossen waterfalls, there is a short stop at the hotel to enjoy the view before the journey continues to Voss. From Voss, you can continue your journey by train back to Geilo, Oslo or Bergen.

 

World heritage Champagne Cruise

This is an adventure and a unique offer for those who want to experience mountains and fjords by helicopter! The trip takes place with helicopter from Geilo – where you will se a majestic sight from the highest mountains to the deepest fjords. When arriving in the West-Coast of Norway, you will have a magnificent trip by cruise on Naeroyfjord. 

 

The Adventure Road

Adventures between Oslo and Bergen. The Adventure Road leads to exciting experiences, attractions and activities. It runs from Hallingdal in the east - over mountain plains and mountains - to the beautiful, enchanting western Norwegian fjords in Hardanger and Inner Sogn. Opportunities abound - only your fancy places limits on the experiences to be had.

 

Vøringsfossen

Vøringsfossen is Norway’s most visited natural tourist attraction. It has a total fall of 182 metres, including a vertical fall of 145 metres. The best location to see the waterfall is by Fossli Hotel, which lies 20 kilometres from Eidfjord at the top of Måbødalen. Turn off the Rv 7 road at the access road to Fossli Hotel/Vøringsfossen.
 

Hardangervidda Nature Centre

In beautiful and dramatic Western Norway, at the foot of the Vøringsfoss waterfall and by the ascent of the Måbødalen valley, lies the Hardangervidda Nature Center at Eidfjord. The purpose of the centre is to gather and distribute knowledge about interaction in nature and human activities.

 

Sima hydroelectric power plant

One of the largest hydroelectric power plants in Europe. Lies 700 metres into the mountain and is 200-metres-long, 20-metres-wide and 40-metres-high. The plant offers guided tours that include a film about the construction of the power plant and a tour of the power station hall. The whole tour takes about an hour. Sima hydroelectric power plant lies in Simadalen, around one hour from Geilo. Follow the signs to the plant.

E.K.T Langedrag Nature Park

At the nature park you can get close to many Norwegian domestic animals among the farm buildings. The nature park is an excellent place for walks and enables a closer study of animals such as wolves, lynx, polar foxes, elks and reindeer. It is a 45 minutes drive from Geilo.

 

Fonnafly

Light aircraft direct from Oslo to Geilo, Ustedalsfjorden, costs NOK 9200 for four people.

Fonnafly has several different proposals for tours and you can make your own preferences.

Fly from Geilo over the Hardanger Mountain Plateau, national park, past Hårteigen, over Folgefonna and on to Rosendal. In Rosendal you can have a guided tour and have lunch at the Barony. It is 1,5 kilometres from the landing spot to the Barony, an opportunity with a transportation on a horse wagon can be arranged.

 

Norwegian wild salmon centre

The Norwegian Wild Salmon Centre is located on the banks of the Lærdal river. It was opened by His Majesty King Harald on June 15 1996. The Centre provides insight into the life and legends of the Atlantic salmon and informs its visitors about the protection, management and exploitation of the wild salmon stocks.

Aurlandsdalen

At this point the east of Norway and the west of Norway meet in a breathtaking mountain area. The contrasts in the landscape are big; from rock landscape to luxuriance, deep valleys and thundering waterfalls. This hiking tour can be done in numerous of paths. 2 hours by car from Geilo.
