From cabin to cabin on Hardangervidda in winter

If you plan to go from cabin to cabin in winter time, we recommend not doing before the beginning of March. This is because there is no tracks until the beginning of March and the tourist cabins do not open before the tracks are made. From March, they make the tracks and branche them, which means that if the tracks disappear by the wind, you still have branches you can follow. The tracks on Hardangervidda are not groomed, they are only done by snowmobile, which means that the tracks are smaller than what you might be used to, and they are best suited for mountain ski. DNT's branchy tracks take you to seven serviced and five self-serviced tourist huts in the national park. At the serviced tourist cabins you can buy a delicious home-cooked meal, and the self-service cabins have a rich food store where you can buy food such as crackers, snacks and dinner. Everyone can use DNT's cabins, but in cabins without a host, at least one person in the party must be a member of DNT to be able to rent the special DNT key (can be borrowed from Tourist Information Geilo). If you are going from cabin to cabin, we recommend to pre-book beds, and let them know of any food allergies. The winter season is short, from the beginning of March to right after Easter. You can move around freely on Hardangervidda, but we recommend that you follow the branched tracks. In any case, bring a map and compass, and learn how to use it. The weather in the mountains can change quickly, there is not mobile service everywhere, take first aid and report where you are going. Tip! Geilo skishop are the only ones in Geilo who rent out mountain skis with steel edges and transport sleds. If you start your trip from Geilo, you can take the ski lift up into the mountain platou, this provides a comfortable start and a perfect starting point for the trip into Hardangervidda National park. If you are taking the ski lift with cross-country skis, you must be able to show that you have packed warm clothes, otherwise they may refuse you to take the lift for safety reasons.
